Metastases Defined

The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another. A tumor formed by cells that have spread is called a ?metastatic tumor? or a ?metastasis.? The metastatic tumor contains cells that are like those in the original (primary) tumor. The plural form of metastasis is metastases.

  • Cancer's one-way ticket to the brain - health - 13 May 2009 - New Scientist: HOW do cancer cells get into the brain? A "ticket&q uot; made of three genes seems to grant them access in mice. The discovery could one day lead to drugs that cancel out a similar ticket in people. Around 10 per cent of people whose cancer has metastasised, or spread beyond the original site, develop brain tumours. It's a mystery how cancer cells get past the "blood-br ain barrier", which prevents the passage of most cells.
