Individuals with a history of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), especially those who had it at a younger age, are at significantly greater risk for future cancers, according to a study led by Anthony J. Alberg, Ph.D., of the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The most common form of skin cancer may be an indicator for risk of other cancers that do not involve the skin. People with non-melanoma skin cancer have nearly two times the risk of developing other types of cancer, according to a study published Tuesday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
