The Epstein-Barr virus is a type of human virus that causes infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever or ‘mono’). The virus is also linked to two types of cancer: Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Scientists are unsure how the virus is involved in these diseases.
