Colonoscopy Defined
(ko-lun-AHS-ko-pee) An examination of the inside of the colon using a thin, lighted tube (called a colonoscope) inserted into the rectum. If abnormal areas are seen, tissue can be removed and examined under a microscope to determine whether disease is present.

There is no consensus yet over what the interval should be between colonoscopy screens for colorectal cancer. Researchers have now monitored a group of people after a negative colonoscopy. During five years of follow up, there were no cases of cancer.
